Definition
The Oral-B iO Series 3 is a battery-powered electric toothbrush manufactured by Oral-B under the Braun product line. Its purpose is to make brushing easier and more effective than a regular toothbrush by replacing the manual scrubbing action with motorized brushing, which is especially helpful for children and people with disabilities. The toothbrush can be sold individually or in packs of two, and included in the purchase is a wireless charger and an extra brush head.
Overview
The Oral-B iO Series 3 consists of a 6-inch oval-shaped textured rubber handle and a slim removable plastic brush head, atop which is a small, circular brush with durable multicolored bristles. The brush stands at about 9.25 inches tall from base to bristles with a 1-inch handle, slightly thicker than a conventional toothbrush, to house the rechargeable motor and battery. The brush comes in multiple colors; white with black accents, white with grey accents, and black with blue accents are the most common color options. The front face of the handle features a control panel with a power button and a mode switching button, as well as branding on the bottom and on the brush neck. Just below the brush head is an LED light wrapping around the circumference of the handle, which will light up green when charging and red to warn the user when they are using too much pressure. At the bottom of the handle is a small port that connects to the wireless charging base provided in the box, which plugs into a wall socket for power. The toothbrush is engineered to be well-balanced in the hand and easy to use, weighing about 9.4 ounces or 0.59 pounds1. The brush head is also small, allowing the user to reach all areas of the mouth effectively. The toothbrush is made from a combination of durable textured rubber and hard plastic, ensuring longevity and a firm grip to prevent wrist discomfort.
Components and Explanation
- The brush head is detachable, allowing the user to replace brush heads when needed or store in the travel case for ease of portability. The bristles on the brush head oscillate, rotate, and pulsate depending on the brushing mode the user has selected, each with a different purpose. Different brush heads are also available for specific brushing purposes, such as FlossAction or sensitivity.
- The motor and gear mechanisms within the handle are responsible for the action of the bristles. The motor moves a small metal shaft running through the neck of the brush head into the bristles, and generates oscillating and pulsating motions to dislodge plaque from teeth. The gear mechanism regulates the power coming from the motor and ensures a consistent speed of bristle motion and controlled brush head movements. The motor generates roughly 8,800 oscillations per minute.
- The toothbrush is powered by a rechargeable 3.7 Volt lithium-ion battery which provides approximately 10 days of consecutive use upon a full charge, assuming the user brushes twice daily. The included charging base allows users to stand the brush upright when not in use by plugging the charging nub into the port on the bottom of the handle, which will cause the LED on the toothbrush handle to glow green.
- The control interface of the toothbrush consists of two buttons. The upper button, the power button, is labeled with a binary power symbol, and toggles the power state of the toothbrush. The lower button, the mode button, is labeled with a dot symbol. The mode button cycles through the three preset modes on the toothbrush, which are: daily clean, sensitive, and whitening. Daily clean provides a rotation of the bristles at a constant speed, sensitive lowers the speed for those with sensitive teeth or gums, and whitening provides a pulsating action of the bristles with fluctuating speeds for removing plaque and whitening teeth.
- The toothbrush also comes with some internal features to improve the brushing experience. The toothbrush incorporates a two-minute timer that starts at its actuation, which is split into four 30-second intervals. At each interval, the brush will vibrate briefly, signaling the user to mouth to a different quadrant of the mouth. This ensures that the user cleans every part of the mouth evenly and prevents brushing over the recommended two-minute duration. The toothbrush also features a pressure sensor, designed to detect excessive force during brushing. When it detects the user is applying too much pressure, it will slow down the motor to mitigate damage to the teeth and gums. The LED will also flash red when excess force is sensed. The outer casing of the toothbrush forms a waterproof barrier, protecting the internal mechanisms from water damage in humid and wet settings, such as in the shower.

Conclusion
The Oral-B iO Series 3 is intended to deliver a versatile, easy, and effective cleaning solution. However, its features come with an above average price. It is available for sale for $79.995, depending on your region, making it slightly more expensive than comparable toothbrushes from other companies such as Philips, Quip, and Aquasonic. The iO Series 3 is just one toothbrush from Oral-B large selection of toothbrushes, each at different price points and with different sets of features. Since the iO Series 3’s initial release in 2024, Oral-B has released seven more electric toothbrushes in the series, giving modern consumers several options to choose from. Oral-B uses feedback from dental professionals to improve on their toothbrushes, ensuring the highest quality products. To maximize the lifespan of the toothbrush, it should be stored in a dry place and properly cleaned after each use to prevent buildup of bacteria. Users should also replace the brush head every three months for best results. The combination of all of the Oral-B io Series 3’s features make it a reliable pick for users seeking to invest into their oral health.
